Young Quin Waters joins Reds’ squad

06/09/2018

Jersey Reds have agreed the signing of Harlequins scrum-half Calum Waters, who begins a season-long loan from his 'parent' club.

The 22-year-old graduate of the London-based Gallagher Premiership club's academy has made four senior appearances for Harlequins 1st XV, scoring a try on debut in the Anglo-Welsh Cup semi-final in March 2016, as well as playing for England in that year's Under 20 Six Nations. He captained Quins in the recent Premiership Sevens, and was named player of the tournament after some eye-catching displays.

Sussex-born and a product of Brighton College, Waters gained early experience of senior rugby as a teenager while playing for Worthing in National 2 South in the 2014/15 season.

Waters joins up with the Reds following the enforced retirement of scrum-half Joel Dudley, who was obliged to hang up his boots after six seasons with the club following medical advice.

"We are really pleased to have secured a player of Calum's calibre, and thankful that Harlequins have recognised the opportunity for him to develop by spending time with a Championship club," said Jersey Reds Head Coach Harvey Biljon. "He's already been an energetic presence at training and will be competing for game-time with our other scrum-halves in the coming weeks."

Commenting on Calum’s release Paul Gustard, Harlequins Head of Rugby said, “Calum has made considerable progress since he joined us.  The opportunity to gain regular first team experience with Jersey will benefit him.  We will continue to monitor his development with regular feedback from Nick Evans and wish him well for his season in the Championship.”

After starting the season with a 20-15 loss at Coventry, the Reds are preparing for another away game, the visit to Bedford Blues this Saturday.
