On a wet and windy night in Belfast, Jersey were narrowly denied
a victory as Ulster Ravens held on to secure their first B&I
cup win.
In a game that was always likely to be influenced by the cold,
wet and windy conditions, both sides struggled to get a grip on
proceedings and it remained scoreless until Jersey exerted pressure
from a scrum after 12 minutes to recycle the ball for skipper Rae
to score an unconverted try.
After that, Ulster fought their way back into contention with a
penalty and then a converted try of their own. They went further
ahead with a second penalty to lead 11-5 at the break.
Ulster then dominated the 3rd quarter of the game extending
their lead to 21-5 with 2 penalties either side of a try before
Jersey made a number of telling changes of personnel.
With fresh legs in the pack and Griffiths on at scrum half,
Jersey went up a gear and turned the game with two converted
penalty tries to set up a tense finish.
Ulster scored one more penalty against the run of play as Jersey
pressed for what had looked a most unlikely victory, but the
homeside held on.
