Trio of new signings for 2019/20

19/03/2019

Jersey Reds have confirmed three further additions to the squad being assembled for next season: scrum-half Luc Jones, prop Daniel Richardson and centre George Spencer.

The trio are due to arrive on the Island in time for pre-season training ahead of the 2019/20 campaign, which will be the Reds' eighth since reaching the Greene King IPA Championship in 2012.

Jones, who will be 25 in May, was born in Neath and represented Wales at under 20 level in the 2014 Junior World Cup. He played for Welsh region the Dragons from 2013-16, including appearances in the Pro 12 and European Challenge Cup, plus home-and-away British & Irish Cup ties against Jersey.

After moving to England and playing for Harlequins in 2016/17, Jones joined Richmond in 2017 and has been a key member of the London side's squad.

"Luc is a player who's impressed on several of the occasions he's played against us," said Jersey Director of Rugby Harvey Biljon. "He had experience as a full-time professional earlier in his career and now has a chance to return to that environment and become an even better player."

Richardson, who'll celebrate his 23rd birthday next week, took the first steps in his rugby career with his home-town club Penrith. He then made the move across the Pennines and studied Sports and Exercise Science at Leeds Beckett University. He has two seasons' experience at National 1 level, last season with Fylde, and this season for Rotherham.

"Dan is a very promising young player who has shown his capability while playing in National 1 and now has the chance to make the step up and realise his potential," said Biljon.

Spencer was born in Harrogate in February 1999 but educated in South Africa after moving there with his family at the age of four. He attended Bishops, a renowned rugby school in Cape Town, and played for Western Province under 18s in 2017. He moved to Europe last year and became part of the Scottish Academy, representing Scotland at under 19 level and featuring for the under 20 development squad this season, as well as playing club rugby for Edinburgh Academical FC, the "Accies".

Harvey Biljon added: "I'm really excited to see how George will develop as he moves beyond age-grade rugby and has the chance to really develop as a pro player."

The trio will join two new signings already announced - second row duo Liam Hallam-Eames and Alex Thompson - plus 26 members of this season's squad who will be extending their time with the Reds into next season.

"There are still a few remaining slots to finalise for next season, but I'm really happy with the progress," said Biljon. "Planning will continue behind the scenes, but the immediate priority is on a strong finish to the current season - we have five very important league games ahead of us in the coming weeks."

After a week's break, Jersey Reds will return to action on home turf this Saturday, with a Championship match against Hartpury. Kick-off at Stade Santander International will be at 3pm.
