Tongan fundraising efforts helping the people of
Faleloa
After a fantastic fundraising effort by the supporters of JRFC
which included a cake sale, bucket collection and sponsored
head-shaving, the total figure raised for Latu and Elvis' Tonga
cyclone appeal was an impressive £2700 equating to $7800 Tongan
Dollars. Latu, Elvis and their family and friends back in Tonga
would like to convey their very sincere gratitude to everyone who
contributed.
In an attempt to ease suffering, the Tongan authorities have
supplied every village affected with a water tank to ensure a
supply of clean water for cooking and washing. Unfortunately in
many cases these have proved too small in catering to the needs of
the population of the village and Latu's home, Faleloa, is no
exception. Initially the funds raised were expected to be put
towards buying a higher capacity water tank from abroad but due to
their substantial cost, the people of the village have elected to
spend $5000 of the sum raised by JRFC on oil which will power high
pressure water pumps thus allowing the entire village to have
access to clean water until December.
The remaining $2800 will go towards helping Latu's parents
reconstruct the ceilings of their house which sustained significant
damage during the storms.
Once again, a very big thank you to all who donated!
