International scrum-half Samisoni Fisilau has become the latest
addition to the Jersey RFC squad.
Fisilau, who has won 15 caps for his native Tonga, comes to the
Island after playing the majority of his professional rugby in New
Zealand, most recently for Bay of Plenty in the ITM Cup. He joined
Bay of Plenty from Counties Manukau in 2011 and was also a squad
member for the Wellington-based Super Rugby franchise the
Hurricanes.
The 27-year-old (pictured above), nicknamed 'Fish', is
a replacement for Nicky Griffiths, who parted company with the club
in early December in order to return home to Wales.
"We've been looking for some time to sign a scrum-half and have
had Sami on the radar - I'm very pleased that his signing is
confirmed and he's arrived on the Island and got his boots on,"
said Head Coach Harvey Biljon. "He is a very talented player who
still has international ambitions and is looking to develop his
career in Europe.
"He's a powerful man to be wearing the number 9 shirt and I
think his style of play will complement our existing scrum-halves
Joel Dudley and Ryan Glynn."
Fisilau, who stands 6ft 2ins tall and weighs just over 16 stone,
will be in contention for Jersey's next match in the Greene King
IPA Championship, the away trip to Doncaster this Saturday. He made
his debut for Tonga in 2010, played in the 2011 Rugby World Cup and
won his most recent cap against Fiji last June.
