Jersey augment back-line with new signing

11/11/2014

Head Coach Harvey Biljon has added a new player to the back
division of his Jersey RFC squad.

Ross Jones-Davies, 24, is a full-back who can also play in other
positions across the back-line. He comes to the Island from Cape
Town, where he was a student at the University of Cape Town
(UCT).

While completing his under-graduate and post-graduate studies in
South Africa, Jones-Davies (pictured above) played 70
times for the UCT 1st team, known as the Ikey Tigers, culminating
in a notable comeback to win the final of the 2014 FNB Varsity Cup,
which is contested by South Africa's premier student teams.
Jones-Davies was joint third in the try-scoring table for this
year's tournament.

Born in South Africa, Jones-Davies moved to the UK at the age of
five. All of his schooling took place in England and he represented
Surrey Under 18s, as well as playing for Cobham RFC while still a
teenager.

"Ross is a real talent whose elusive running and kicking game
will provide an exciting option for our back-line," said Biljon.
"He will now get the chance to develop his career in a professional
environment and I'm looking forward to working with him."

Jones-Davies joins Jersey a few weeks after the departure of
Tommy Bell, the former Wasps full-back who impressed supporters
during a short stay on the Island before signing for Aviva
Premiership club Leicester.

The new signing arrived on the Island just in time to watch his
new team-mates move into the top half of the Greene King IPA
Championship league table with a gritty 19-0 win over Plymouth
Albion on Saturday. He joined training for the first time yesterday
as the Islanders' squad prepared for this Friday's away match
against third-placed London Scottish.

The Jersey 1st XV will next be in action at home when they play
their first-ever evening match, the British & Irish Cup match
against Plymouth Albion on Friday November 28th at 7.30pm. Before
then the Jersey Athletic XV will be in action at St Peter this
Saturday, November 15th, when they take on London Scottish
Highlanders at 12noon (there's lunch available in the Clubhouse
afterwards - two courses for £15 while watching England v South
Africa on the big screens. Email Sean
Dunne
