B&I Cup – Preview to Round 4

18/12/2015

Moseley will aim to make it back to back wins in this season's British & Irish Cup when they take on Rotherham Titans in one of four all-Greene King IPA Championship ties this weekend.

While the West Midlands side may find themselves at the wrong end of the league table this season with three wins from 11, they have fared better in the British & Irish Cup and sit second in Pool 1 behind Leinster A.

Their second win of the competition came last Saturday as they hosted Rotherham in the first of a double header against their Greene King IPA Championship rivals.

Tries for Scott Tolmie, Harry Casson and Alex Mitchell saw Moseley record a 26-10 win, and leaves the Titans knowing nothing but a victory at Clifton Lane on Sunday will be enough to keep their hopes alive in the competition.

Fellow Greene King IPA Championship sides Nottingham and London Welsh will also battle it out on the same day in Pool 4 with the former having seen their chances of progressing extinguished after a 42-17 reverse to the same opponents last weekend.

The Green and Whites named a strong team for the clash with top try-scorer Paul Grant and Conor Carey making their first cup appearances of the season.

But they fell behind early to Will Robinson's penalty before Darren Waters grabbed himself a hat-trick in three of six tries recorded by London Welsh, who find themselves one point behind Pool 4 leaders Cornish Pirates.

Unbeaten in the competition so far this season, the Pirates will be looking for victory number four when they play host to Cardiff Blues Premiership Select on Saturday.

Last weekend's reverse fixture proved to be a tough test with the Welsh side applying the pressure but the Pirates were clinical with their attacking play with Jack Arnott helping himself to two tries and Tyler Gendall another in a 22-10 win.

Also on Saturday, Greene King IPA Championship leaders Bristol Rugby will look to maintain their advantage at the top of Pool 2 with a second consecutive win over Bedford Blues.

After losing to the Blues on the opening day of the season, Bristol gained their revenge in style last weekend, running in eight tries – including a hat-trick for Ellis Genge – in a 52-8 win at Ashton Gate.

It leaves them on ten points in the group, just one clear of both Ulster A – who host winless Scarlets on Saturday – and Bedford Blues.

Yorkshire Carnegie are another Greene King IPA Championship side who are in pole position in their pool, having beaten London Scottish 56-7 last weekend to move a point clear of Munster A.

In a bizarre coincidence, both teams had a player named Chris Walker in the number 7 jersey but it was hosts Yorkshire Carnegie who came out on top as they ended a three-match losing run – Walker with a hat-trick for the home side.

London Scottish still only sit two points behind Yorkshire Carnegie in the pool and can take heart from their 30-27 victory in the league back in September.

Saturday sees the top two teams in Pool 5 go head-to-head again with Doncaster Knights looking to build on their 21-16 win over Newport Gwent Dragons Premiership Select while third-placed Jersey will aim to keep the pressure on when they host Connacht Eagles – a team they beat 40-10 last time out. Elsewhere Ealing Trailfinders go in search of their first victory in the competition against Pool 1 leaders Leinster A while Munster A will aim to keep the pressure on Yorkshire Carnegie when they play winless Ospreys Premiership Select in Pool 3 on Sunday.
