Jersey 12 Moseley 31

Charlie Hayter registered a splendid hat-trick to give his side
their first win of the season and leave Head Coach Kevin Maggs a
proud man.

The trio of tries by the Moseley centre made the difference
against a determined Jersey side who contributed to their own
downfall with a plethora of mistakes, and were punished to the tune
of 11 penalties to three by referee David Rose.

"I'm very proud of my boys - I knew this would be a tough game,
with Jersey having a great home record," he said. "It's a long way
to come, but the travel worked out fine and we had a great
start."

Maggs said his side would use the result as the platform to move
up the league, and slammed as "a joke" those pundits who had
described a mid-September game as being a relegation decider.

Hayter charged over after just six minutes, and added his second
try, courtesy of Simon Hunt's line-break and pass, later in the
first half. Ollie Thomas landed four penalties to boost his side's
total, while Jersey scored tries through Donovan Sanders and Glenn
Bryce but completed the half with 14 men after Kingsley Lang was
sin-binned for foul play.

Moseley successfully defended their 12-point lead throughout the
second half, inspired by sterling work in defence led by Ben Pons.
The flanker forced several turnovers as the hosts made handling
errors as they chased the game.

In the final minute, the Moseley forwards charged through
Jersey's defence with Ethan Waller sending replacement Buster
Lawrence close to the try-line, and when the ball was recycled it
landed in Hayter's hands for the hat-trick try. The conversion by
Thomas took the full-back's total for the day to 16 points.

"It was really hard for us, we'd worked hard in training this
week but when we came out it just didn't happen for us," said
Jersey's Donovan Sanders. "We were on the back foot and there were
lots of mistakes - you have to look after the ball at this
level."
