Jersey 28 - Blaydon 7
This was, to use the old cliché, a game of two halves. Blaydon
led at half time 7-3 thanks to a converted Baggett try on the
stroke of half time after Jersey had taken the lead with a
Broadfoot penalty midway through the half.
The game was shaping up as expected as a very tough battle
between the two packs, with Blaydon always opting to go for
line-outs rather than kick points, and very much controlling the
game for large passages of play.
That all changed as soon as the two sides came out for the
second half, and Jersey literally blitzed Blaydon away. Was it the
early start, the fact that they had given so much in the first half
or simply that Jersey stepped it up a gear?
The first try came following a charge down by Felton who
gathered the ball, drove on 15 yards before off-loading for captain
S O'Brien to score in the corner, converted by Broadfoot.
A Broadfoot penalty soon followed and then the second try of the
afternoon, courtesy of Bryce who scored wide on the left following
some superb handling. Maggs then scored on the right wing and that
was how it stayed at 23-7 until the final play of the game that saw
Dawson finish well in the bottom left hand corner to earn the bonus
point and make it 28-7 full time.
