SSE National League One
Jersey v Wharfedale
Oct 8th 2011
By Tom Innes
Jersey crowned a tough week with a thumping win, running six
tries past the visitors from Yorkshire.
Following news of a five-point deduction for breaching player
eligibility rules, and seeing prop James Ellershaw seriously
injured in a car accident, the home club were desperate to earn
back the lost points and bring some cheer to supporters.
Attacking from the start, Jersey scored the first try within
seven minutes when Mike Le Bourgeois spotted a gap in the visiting
defence and burst through, adding a further five points with his
boot through a conversion and easy penalty.
A sniping burst by Dave McCormack saw Jim Brownrigg go close for
Jersey, and quick ball allowed Glenn Bryce to score on the opposite
flank.
Around 200 members of Wharfe's 'Green Army' of fans, among the
largest ever away contingents to visit Jersey, were cheered by a
Simon Horsfall try, the winger finishing off a superb pacy approach
from prop Chris Steel, narrowing the gap to 15-5.
Donovan Sanders scored Jersey's third try just before the break
and Bryce's second sealed a bonus point for his side after 50
minutes. Jersey's pack then got in on the act, Guy Thompson from a
James Copsey assist and Kingsley Lang crowning a flowing move
involving forwards and backs, especially the peerless Myles 'soft
hands' Landick, with an acrobatic dive over the line.
Both sides tired towards the end and Jersey opted for a late
penalty to seal a 40-point winning margin.
