Moseley 18 Jersey 29

03/10/2015

Jersey returned to winning ways with a well-grafted win over Moseley, who were denied any scoring opportunities in the second half by a determined Reds' defence.

Jersey, captained for the first time by Sam Lockwood after Alex Rae failed a late fitness test kept the scoreboard moving throughout the fixture, capitalising on penalty opportunities, particularly in the first half.

Jersey were first to score early on with a well-struck Brendan Cope penalty, and quickly doubled the advantage with a second successful kick before the hosts then struck back with a converted try to put themselves in front. The lead was ultimately to change six times in the first half as both sides battled hard.

Moseley's first try was made through a very good break down the left. Richard Lane put in a superb tackle, but the support was there and with the Jersey defence in disarray and too exposed, Kyle Evans finished off the move.

Martin Garcia-Veiga scored a first half try for Jersey from a catch and drive move as they made the most of a man advantage after Greg Charlton had picked up a yellow card for bringing down a maul, before Moseley scored their second try through lock Harry Casson.

The difference between the two sides in the first half was Moseley's penalty count, and Brendan Cope's clinical accuracy, and they turned around with Jersey holding a narrow 18-19 advantage.

The second half was personified by Jersey's gritty, offensive defence. Moseley were keen to continually try and run the ball from deep, and the Red's forwards were quick to stamp out any threat and keep the home side pegged back deep in their own half.

Cope landed an early penalty after the break to extend the advantage and Jersey's second half try, scored by Charlie Butterworth from another driving maul came later on when Moseley were again playing with a man down. Moseley were to pick up a third yellow card towards the end as Jersey closed out the game.

Both head coach Harvey Biljon and Chairman Bill Dempsey were delighted and full of praise for the way that the team had played and closed out what had at times been a bit of a scrappy game. Aside from Cope, the other outstanding performance of the afternoon came from Gary Graham with a very high work rate and fantastic tackling throughout.
