Anthony Nolan saves the lives of people with blood cancer.
Everday the charity matches remarkable donors willing to donate
their blood stem cells to people who desperately need lifesaving
transplants.
The Jersey Friends of Anthony Nolan are
holding a registration day on Friday 20th July at
St Helier Town Hall between 12.30 and 3pm and would welcome
your support.
This is the 3rd time that registrations have been held here in
Jersey, and there has always been a good uptake.
The first registration day in 2008 was heavily supported by the
local rugby community who teamed up with Channel television to
advertise the event at the first pre-season match staged
between a JRA XV and Jersey Rugby Club. There was particular focus
at the time as Tim Hicklin (ex-Quennevais player) had just
been lucky enough to find a suitable donor.
Channel television had chosen Anthony Nolan in 2008 as
its headline charity, and Hannah Collier contacted the rugby
community as it has been identified that statistically, fit males
between the ages of 18 - 40 very often are the most successful
donors.
100 people registered in the first session that year
and a further 350 across three sessions in 2009.
This will be the first time that the Friends are able to sign up
registrants using a saliva sample, a new technique that has been
trialled in other parts of the UK, and having not held a session
for 3 years, they are hopeful of a good turnout again.
A recent success story is that of Jack Le Brun who joined
the register in 2008 and who has just returned from the UK having
donated blood stem cells to a young cancer sufferer who was only
24.
