The Jersey Athletic team that will compete in The Shield in
2013/14 is about to start pre-season training.
Players will be gathering at Jersey RFC at St Peter on Tuesday
July 23 at 6.30pm for a training session, followed by a squad
meeting to outline plans for the season ahead.
Preparations for the new season follow a successful application
to join The Shield, a merit table competition offering fixtures
against the second teams of clubs such as Blackheath, Richmond and
Ealing Trailfinders. This will provide a good standard of
competitive rugby to players who wish to represent Jersey but
cannot commit to the full-time schedule of JRFC's 1st team.
The Jersey Athletic side will play their first league match on
Saturday September 14 against Richmond at St Peter.
Chris Scott, Chairman of the Jersey Athletic Management
Committee, said the training session would be open to all
players.
"We aren't just looking for those who have previously
represented Jersey RFC - players from the Island's junior clubs
will be welcome to attend and compete for places in the side," he
said. "Fixture planning for the junior clubs will take Shield
fixtures into account, meaning that players can still play for
their club side in the local league."
Players are encouraged to attend the club on Tuesday to find out
full details. Anyone with any queries in advance of this, or is
interested but unable to attend, should contact Jersey Athletic
Head Coach, Dai Burton, on 07797 715800.
