Two Jersey players are doing their bit to raise funds for a good
cause in their native Tonga.
A state of emergency has been declared in Tonga after the most
powerful cyclone in decades hit the archipelago earlier this month.
Cyclone Ian battered the central Ha'apai islands, home to 8,000
people, with gusts of up to 178mph destroying around 80% of the
buildings in existence. The damage has been especially pronounced
in Latu Makaafi's village, where many of his friends and family do
not currently have access to clean water or clothing and are living
in makeshift tented communities.
This Saturday, 25th of January, when Jersey take on his former
club Rotherham, Latu and his team-mate Elvis Taione (pictured
above) will be endeavouring to raise as money as possible to
help alleviate the suffering of their loved ones back home. There
will be collection buckets around the club and JRFC players will be
coming around before the game and during the interval collecting
donations.
After Saturday's game, at 5.30pm in the clubhouse, Latu will be
having his head shaved for charity with the highest donor winning
the right to choose a hairstyle... no matter how ridiculous!
There'll be a chance to buy cakes baked by Latu's wife Alexa,
assisted by the wife of club captain Alex Rae. All proceeds from
the day will be going towards helping the Tongan people re-build
their lives.
It is hoped that supporters will give generously on the day.
