Everyone at Jersey Reds has been saddened to learn of the death yesterday of club stalwart Vic Hanby at the age of 72.
Vic was President of Jersey RFC between 1989 and 1996; during this time he played a pivotal role in project which led to the construction of the new clubhouse at St Peter. The new facility opened in September 1994 during the penultimate season of his tenure as President. He's pictured below after agreeing a sponsorship deal with Derek Warwick Honda in 1990.
A regular and charismatic presence on 1st team match-days up to and including this season, Vic was also heavily involved in the club's Mini & Junior section, where he was a popular coach for many years and a member of the M&J committee.
Back in the day, Vic played wing forward for JRFC during the 1960s and 1980s. Between 1969 and 1983 he worked off-Island when he held visiting lecturer posts at educational establishments in England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Canada and France. On returning to Jersey he founded Victor Hanby Associates Limited, providing technology consultancy services to a range of corporate clients.
The club would like to extend our sincere condolences to Vic's wife Tracy, his children James, Charlotte, Loic, Yannic and Daniel, and the rest of his family at this sad time.
