A cracking first half by the Reds on a chilly afternoon set the scene for what was surely going to be a great afternoon.
Two first half scores by Adair and Freeman, both from open play were both converted by Cope, who then added a penalty before the break, and the Reds were leading 17-3 at the turn around.
The second half started well as Haining got a third, but the tide then turned and Pirates roared back with three of their own to level the scores at 24-24.
With 80 mins on the clock, it was Katz who kept his cool to slot what was to be the decisive penalty, although there was still time to restart. The Reds took it cleanly and held on to seal a memorable victory.
